HOW I VIEW ANXIETY & PANIC
Anxiety is one of the struggles I encounter most with my clients. I view anxiety and panic as a sort of cry that a part of you is using to tell you something is not right and needs your attention. Whereas panic attacks are triggered by the body's reaction to the anxiety. I like to use the analogy of a baby and how it has to communicate with a caregiver in order to get its needs met and survive - the only language a baby has is crying. I believe a part of you is trying to say something and this part learned that the only way it can get your attention and safely express itself is by using anxiety. Have you ever heard the caregiver of an infant say, "oh that is the hungry cry", or "no, that is the tired cry"? They can do this because they've learned to attune to their child's only way of communicating their needs. So we need to help this part develop another way of expressing itself, which means you must lean into courage by showing up and loving this part of you, by slowing down, tuning in, being curious, listening compassionately, and being present with what is happening inside of you.
Watch this video and imagine you are the mom and the baby is what the anxious part of you is doing.
Can you identify what feelings came up as you watched the video? What where your feelings towards the baby vs. the mom?
What is a part of you trying to say when anxiety shows up?
Which of the mom's responses do you have with your vulnerable or inner child part?
What does the child part of you need in the moment anxiety shows up?
I believe your wise heart knows and you already have the answer to healing your anxiety.
Remember, anxiety is not who you are...
but it can be a guide to knowing who you are…and that is what we explore and discover together.
HOW I WORK WITH CLIENTS
I refer to this as stage 1, learning how to put out spot fires, which keeps things from getting out of control, before we try to tackle the wildfire epicentre.
I start working with clients by including some educational pieces about anxiety and panic because I believe knowledge can help you understand, and understanding can lead to care and healing. We then work on soothing and grounding your anxiety by developing your anxiety and panic response kit - a sort of practical real-life toolbox of how to tune into your bodily sensations, rate the level of anxiety being experienced, and then respond with the appropriate grounding and soothing technique. This is where we train the caregiver part of you by tuning into your wise heart, so you learn to respond instead of react to the part of you experiencing anxiety. As you practice this form of present awareness, we begin to identify and recognize your different anxiety triggers and stuck relational and situational patterns, which will clue us into the root of your anxiety - the false view of self.
Once the part of you struggling with anxiety knows you are listening and responding to it, it calms down, like a child does once you turn your attention to them and respond to their needs. This is where the part of you that gets anxious starts finding its voice because you are paying attention and being curious about it. This part is learning to trust you and you are learning to trust yourself because you are no longer dismissing, suppressing, or disowning this part when it gets triggered and scared. Anxiety decreases as this scared vulnerable part of you starts to verbalize what it feels and what it is experiencing.
Now that you are growing in confidence and gaining trust in yourself there is more energy available because anxiety is not draining you out so much. You can start exploring and dealing with the anxiety wild fire epicentre or stage 2. The epicentre is usually from deep false views of self or negative identity beliefs. For example, a false view of self like “I am not enough” may have you anxiously running around endlessly, with little or no healthy boundaries and self care, people-pleasing and making others happy with you. Maybe it's a pattern of not wanting to disappoint people so you form a
pattern of avoiding failure at all costs. When you feel like you cannot make any of these things happen, the anxiety gets triggered or it is always running like a little engine that drives you. This can all stem from this place of believing you are not enough. At this point in the healing journey I find these false views of self come up pretty naturally because you are beginning to turn your attention inward, whereas before anxiety had been misdirecting your attention to the external. Internally is where the answer resides.
